SUSTAINABLE MODULAR HOME

Off-Grid

Considering that renovation and construction waste accounts for about 40% of landfills,  a factory-built modular home that is built off-site can reduce the impact of embodied energy.
Designing the building envelope with innovative solutions that integrate sustainable materials and  practices, can contribute to economic and environmental improvements.
This modular home proposes design strategies that implement passive design, reduce energy consumption, conserve water and improve indoor air quality. These strategies focus to reduce the impact on human and ecological health.

BEVERAGE BAR

Inner City

The average person throws away four pounds of food a day, making up 20% of waste in landfills, which contributes to greenhouse gases.
The beverage bar practices composting as a solution to food waste.
Offering a farm to bottle experience, it serves juices and smoothies from organic whole fruits and vegetables, bought from locally-sourced farmers.
The industrial building features modern restoration with a color scheme of monochrome tones. Millwork and countertops are made from unfinished, reclaimed and renewable materials. In addition, cutlery and packaging are reusable and made with eco-friendly material.
The location was chosen with intent, in hopes of making affordable beverages more accessible to the community.

BIRTHING CENTER

In Rural Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa carries the highest maternal and infant mortality rate. Within the 46 countries, Central African Republic ranks the highest in child survival.
The country has one modern hospital within the city of Bangui that serves a population of 4.75 million people.
Therefore, the proposed birthing village is built in a high-need rural community.
The design solution is a
sustainable birthing village made with vernacular construction where childbearing women can gather for their third trimester.
